Early Years
John was baptised 12 Dec 1597 son of Abraham Jacob of Gamlingay and London, and Mary, daughter of Francis Rogers of Dartford, Kent[1]
He was from a wealthy Yeoman family, his father Abraham having made a fortune as a customs farmer working in the customs syndicate run by Sir Maurice Abbott.
Education
Jan 1617 He matriculated Merton College Oxford aged 19; Awarded his B.A. 6 Feb., 1617. .[2]
His wealthy background not only afforded him a good education but enabled him to spend the next few years travelling taking in both Italy and Switzerland.
Career
His main revenue was from collecting tobacco and alcohol duties.
April 19 1618 Following in his father’s footsteps he became customs farmer collector of tobacco duties until 1638 and was granted a perpetual license to do so. Grant to Abraham and John Jacob of the office of collecting impositions on tobacco for life. [3]
In May 1633 he was Knighted [4]
Jan 31 1637 He was authorised to compound with persons willing to be incorporated for using the art and mystery of common maltsters and also with such persons as offered themselves to take grants from his Majesty to be allowed as common maltsters[5]
At its high point his estate was worth more than £3000 pa but his allegiance to the King resulted his Estates being sequestered during the reformation and having loaned Large sums of money to the King found himself impoverished . [6]
The restoration of the monarchy in 1660 went some way to restoring his fortune. He recovered the customs farm, and his previous loyalty was rewarded in 1665 with a baronetcy, which he celebrated by erecting ten almshouses in his native village. [7]
His was the first of the Jacob Baronetcy.[8]
Politics
He was a Royalist and supporter of Charles I.
He was MP for Plympton Erle 1624 and in April 1640, he was elected MP for Harwich in the Short Parliament. He was elected MP for Rye for the Long Parliament in November 1640. However he was expelled in 1641 as a tobacco monopolist.
c1642 He suffered for his loyalty during the reign of King Charles I and was imprisoned in Crosby-House along with Sir George Whitmore, Lord Mayor of London, Sir Kenelm Digby and Roger Pettward Esq for refusing to contribute financially to parliament.[9]
Property
He accumulated a great deal of land and property including manors of Upper Bromley in Middlesex and Woodbury in Gamlingay, Stansted Hall in Halsted and extensive plots in Earls Colne.[10]
The manor of Bromley, founded by William I. was granted by Henry VIII. after the Dissolution, to Sir Ralph Sadler and some time after 1620 was sold to Sir John Jacob. In the parish church of St Mary is a monument, supported by black marble pillars of the Corinthian order, to the memory of Abraham Jacob, Esq, John’s father who died in 1629. Effigies of the deceased and of his wife are represented kneeling at a desk. [11]

Marriage 3 Elizabeth eldest daughter of Sir John Ashburnham by whom he had Margaret Married to Muschamp of Row Barnes in Surrey
1651 Sir John Jacob Knight of St Leonard’s Bromley neere London, once Lord of the Manor of Colne-Wake and Patron of the Rectory and Mrs Elizabeth Ashburneham the Eldest daughter of Sir John Ashburneham Knight of Kent were Marryed April 17th 1651 [12]
In 1664 the Diarist Rev Ralph Josselin speaks of a dinner with him .....dined with Sr. J. Jacob visiting his house at Halsted where he was 7 or 8 years ago very low, pinched for many years with the Kings debts, not knowing scarcely how to provide for his family, which he bore to my view with prudence. patience and submission to god, now he is in a very old age, full disposing his children high in the world, paying debts, clearing all and cheerful.[13]
