Geographical Note and Social context: n 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Metheringham like this:
METHERINGHAM, a village and a parish in the district and county of Lincoln. The village stands near a navigation to the river Witham,.. The parish contains also the hamlet of Tanvats. Acres, 4,590.^[1]
The parish measures about 11 miles long east to west and 1 mile wide, bounded at its eastern end by the river Witham. Metheringham drain defines the southern boundary draining into the river Witham. The eastern part of the parish being on the flood plain. west of the village is named for heath land.
