Eliza was born about 1835. She was born about 1835 in England. She married George Checkley in 1852 and the couple, along with their two sons, emigrated to New Zealand aboard the vessel "Indiana", which departed England on 2 August 1858 and arrived into Lyttelton on 23 November 1858. Her husband, George, was recorded on the passenger list as being aged 30, a "carpenter" and Eliza, aged 24. Sons - Tom (aged 4) and Jonathan (aged 1).
According to her husband's Obituary, during the voyage to New Zealand, Eliza hurt her arm and was assisted by a Mrs Bates. The two became close friends and after their arrival into Lyttelton, Mr and Mrs Bates joined the couple in moving to Akaroa. Eliza's husband initially had a job working for a Mr S. C. Farr in Akaroa, but then went into partnership with Rev. Mr. Aylmer in a dairy farm. Eventually George purchased his own dairy farm and continued purchasing more land and making it a very successful enterprise. The farm in Akaroa was known as "Mount Pleasant".
She passed away in 1879, aged 44.
