Biography

Notables Project
A. Y. Jackson CC CMG is Notable.

A.Y. (Alexander Young) Jackson was a Canadian painter and a founding member of the Group of Seven. As well as his work with the Group of Seven, he served as a war artist during the First World War and taught at the Banff School of Fine Arts, from 1943 to 1949. In his later years he was artist-in-residence at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinberg, Ontario.

Born in Montreal in 1882, he was the son of Henry Jackson, an unsuccessful businessman, and his wife Elizabeth Young. [1][2][3]After his father abandoned the family, Jackson worked as a teenager at a lithography company and attended art classes at the Art Association of Montreal. In the early 1900s he also studied in Chicago and Paris.

He moved to Toronto and in 1914 shared a studio with Tom Thomson. After the war, he moved into the Studio Building and worked there until 1955. From 1920 on, he exhibited with the Group of Seven. In 1955 he relocated to Manotick near Ottawa, but in 1968 ill health forced him to move again, this time to Kleinburg.[4]

Jackson died on April 5, 1974 in Kleinburg and was buried in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection Burial Grounds.[5] A.Y. Jackson Secondary School in Toronto is named in his honour.
