Biochemist best known for his work on the molecular basis of sickle cell anemia and other diseases
Harvey was born in 1920. His parents are まさお (板野) Itano and すまこ (中原) Itano. He attended the University of California, Berkeley. He and his family were sent to an internment camp. He attended St. Louis University medical school where he obtained his M.D. He received his doctorate at the California Institute of Technology.
He worked in the lab of Linus Pauling on sickle cell anemia. Using electrophoresis, he demonstrated the difference between normal hemoglobin and sickle cell hemoglobin. He conducted landmark research in both molecular medicine and protein electrophoresis. He brought the new field of "molecular medicine" to other genetic and blood diseases. In 1954, he won the Eli Lilly Award in Biological Chemistry. In 1972, he won the Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Achievement Award, recognizing his sickle cell work.
He passed away in 2010.
