Frederick Isom arrived in Canada on 13 May 1912, at Quebec, Canada, aboard the ship, Corsican, at the age of 15. He traveled with a group of British Home Children, it is however unclear if he was actually a home child or if he was included in the group because his parents took in foster children. [3]

Frederick joined the army on 3 November 1914 at Stratford, Ontario, Canada. He served in the 18th Battalion, Canadian Garrison Regiment. Fred was injured on 9 April 1917 at Vimy Ridge. He was discharged on 9 July 1918 due to being medically unfit for duty from the wounds he suffered at Vimy Ridge. While serving in the war Fred earned a Military Medal for " conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty", for selecting an alternate position to dig a jumping off trench during hostile fire, disregarding the danger Fred dug the trench in the alternate position. [4]
