Big Y700 YDNA Haplogroup R-FT170573 Earliest Known Ancestor.

Isaac was born about 1767. He married Martha Unknown. There is no record of their marriage.

Isaac and Martha had three known children, Rebecca Jane (Irwin) Stewart, Elizabeth (Irwin) Stewart, and Isaac Irwin.

Isaac Irwin may be found in an entry of the Tithe Applotment Book for the townland of Derrinaboe in November 1827 as the occupier of 4 Cunningham acres, 2 roods, 30 perches of arable land.[1] He also occupied 72 Cunningham acres, 3 roods, 38 perches of poor past[ure] land in the adjacent section of Derryork in Dungiven Parish in July 1834.[2]

He is not enumerated in the 1831 Census in either of the townlands.

He died on 22 Jan 1847 in Derryork (Bovevagh Parish), County Londonderry, Ireland.[3]

Research Notes

Previous to locating the death notice of Martha (Unknown) Irwin, Isaac's given name was suspected but not confirmed. The inscription on the gravestone erected by his son Isaac Irwin did not list his parents names, simply stating it was erected "to the memory of his father who died 22nd January 1847 aged 80 years. Also to his mother who died 20th November 1863 aged 78 years." When his son, Isaac, died, he was also buried there.

Martha's death notice calls her the "relict of the late Mr. Isaac Irwin," and reports she died at Drumaduff, where her son, Isaac lived.[4] The family lived in nearby Derryork Townland (Bovevagh Parish), known as "Derrinaboe," and were listed on a Manor of Freemore tenant list in 1848 in Derryork. The first documented reference to the younger Isaac Irwin living in Drumaduff was in November 1857, so it is likely the elder Isaac died in Derryork.

Tithe Applotment Book for Parish of Bovevagh, Townland of Derrinaboe, 1 Nov 1827

"Isaac Irwin" is listed as the occupier of arable land consisting of 3 Cunningham acres, 3 roods, 0 perches, at a rate of 4s 6d, for a value of 3£ 9s 4d, and a tithe of 7s 8d. A quarter acre was added (3R 30P, value of 7s 4d, tithe 1s 10 1/2d), for a total of 4A, 2R, 30P, value of £4 6s 8d, and tithe of 9s 4 1/2d.

Tithe Applotment Book for Parish of Dungiven, Townland of Derryork, 21 July 1834 Isaac Irwin is also listed as the occupier of poor pasture land, 72 Cunningham acres, 3 roods, 38 perches,

DNA

Paternal Earliest Known Ancestor (EKA) of third-great-grandson and FamilyTreeDNA Big Y-700 tester Brian Irwin, kit no. B207261, haplogroup R-FT170573.

The Big Y test results for tester EV5603, a descendant of John Irwin (1767?–1859) of Derryork, place him in the same terminal haplogroup, R-FT170573, indicating a close familial relationship between Isaac Irwin and John Irwin. This was not unexpected, since Isaac Irwin also lived in Derryork, but there are other Irwin families in the immediate area who Y-DNA testing has shown were not closely related.

Kit EV5603 matches the modal haplogroup of the R-FT354024 haplogroup with the following values: 426=12->13; 570=16->17; and 710=34->33 (one tester, 708389, has now tested without this value). He also shares 549=13->14 with kits B207261 (patrilineal descendant of Isaac Irwin), 153158, 1006308, IN131922, MK77947, and 361220, all of the R-FT170573 subclade. In addition, EV5603 shares YGA10=13->12 with B207261.[6] This likely indicates an even closer relationship between Isaac and John Irwin's line.
