William was born in 1836. He is the daughter of Jeramiah Irvine and Elizabeth Rosenkranz. Recent documentation in the estate of Raymond Irvine Dawson, Jr. confirmed that William Henry Irvine could have been named after his grandfather, Henry Irvine.

William married Lucinda Yereance on 3 June, 1860. They had two children, Frances Irvine, who never married, and Frederick Irivine who had one daughter, Hazel Irvine Park, who corresponded with Raymond Irvine Dawson, Jr. Hazel, who lived in Lyme, New Hampshire, USA in 1968, was a member of the New Hampshire State legislature and a friend of Jimmy Cleveland's.

The 29 June 1877 Census record shows that he was living in Brooklyn, New York, USA with his wife, Lucy Irvine, age 38, and sons Henry, age 12 and William, age 9. William Sr. was employed as a road builder in New York. This document shows that all family members were born in Kings County, now Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA.

William served in the Civil War as a Private, in Company B, 114th Regiment, New York Infantry, on the side of the Union. He received a government pension in 1880.

The 1910 Census record shows that he was living alone in Hackensack Township, Bergen, New Jersey, United States, and his occupation was that of a carriage builder. His death date is not known, but it must have been after 1910.
