Lieutenant-Colonel John George (1802–1871) was the son of James Irvine (1766 – 1829), a businessman and political figure in Lower Canada.[1] and the husband of Anne Bell, daughter of Matthew Bell.[2] They were the parents of George Irvine, Acheson Irvine and Commissary-General Matthew Bell Irvine (1832–1889) CB, CMG, of the British Army.
He was appointed captain of the Royal Quebec Volunteers at the outbreak of the 1837 Rebellion, later promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and deputy-quartermaster-general of the militia and finally made major of the Queen's Volunteers, an active service unit.[3]
He was a merchant for a time, later served as A.D.C. to the Governor-General and was chosen to be acting adjutant-general to attend on the Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII of the United Kingdom) during his visit to Canada in 1860/61.[4]
He was buried in Mount Hermon Cemetery in Quebec.[5]
1851 Québec City, Québec County, Canada East.[6]
