Monte Irvin is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, elected in 1973. He played both right and left field for the Newark Eagles of Negro League, and later played in Major League Baseball for the New York Giants and the Chicago Cubs. He was an All-Star in 1952, and helped the Giants win the World Series in 1954.

Monte was the eighth child of thirteen born to Cupid and Elizabeth Henderson Irvin. While the family lived in Haleburg, Cupid worked as a sharecropper.
