Biography

Sir Edmund Ingoldsthorpe ( Inglethorpe or Ingoldisthorpe) was born at Burrough Green, Cambs., about 1421, the 2nd son of Thomas Ingoldisthorpe, of Ingoldisthorpe and Raynham, Norfolk, and Margaret de la Pole.

His wardship was granted to John Tiptoft, 1st Lord Tiptoft, husband of Joyce de Cherleton. He married their daughter, Joan Tiptoft.

He founded chantries at Burrough Green for himself and his wife and daughter. He was heir to the estates of de la Pole and Bradstone families, his elder brother having predeceased him.

He held the manor of Melksham, Gloucestershire, in 1448.[1]

He died at Bisham, Berks., about 1456; buried Burrough Green. He founded chantries at Burrough Green for himself and his wife and daughter.

Child of Sir Edmund Ingoldsthorpe and Joan Tiptoft:

  1. Isabel Ingoldsthorpe d. 20 May 1476

Notes on Barony

By modern doctrine, the Barony of Bradeston devolved on to him and his descendants although none of his heirs were called to Parliament before it merged with the honours of John Neville and was attainted in 1471.

Don't change! The History of Parliament, though not free of oddities and errors, is more modern than Cokayne, who had his eccentricities, and is founded on more recent research. In any case, the village from which the family took its name is nowadays written INGOLDISTHORPE.

History of Parliament uses the spelling "Ingoldisthorpe", while Cokayne prefers the spelling "Ingoldsthorpe" which I think is preferred, so please change the LNAB to the latter spelling. Thanks!
