Biography

Nathaniel Ingersoll was a witchcraft accuser in the Salem Witch Trials

Nathaniel Ingersoll was born 1632 Salem, Essex Co, MA, and was mentioned in his father's (Richard Ingersoll) will as the youngest son. He married to Hannah Collins, 25 March 1657 at Salem. [1] Nathaniel was chosen deacon of the church at Salem Village 24 Nov 1689 and at the same time he was a Lieutenant and inn-holder. He played an active part in the witchcraft delusion in 1692. [2]

Nathaniel Ingersoll was an important figure in Salem, and many of the early meetings and events of the Salem Witch Trials occurred at his home/tavern since church meetings were held at his home. He participated in the trials themselves, as well. [3] [4]

INGERSOLL, NATHANIEL, Salem, s. of Richard, not b. in Eng. was an innholder, m. Hannah Collins, it is said, had only d. wh. d. bef. him; was chos. deac. 24 Nov. 1689 of that ch. at the village now Danvers, where the devil had his great triumphs, many of the trials of the witches being held at his tavern / house; was freem. 1690, and lieut. d. early in 1719. From him, thro. fem. line, descend. the late emin. mathemat. Nathaniel Bowditch, translat. of La Place, all whose ch. bear this fam. name. Young's Chron. of Mass. [5]

Lynn, Essex Co, Massachusetts memorial marker inscription reads: "Deacon Nathaniel Ingersoll 1634 - 1719 gave this land to the inhabitants of Salem Village as A Training Place Forever. To the memory of him and of the brave men who have gone hence to protect their homes and to serve their country, this stone is erected by the town. 1894."

  2. 17 Dec 1711, Compensation to Survivors, Governor Dudley, GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS BAY, approved compensation to such persons as are living, and to those that legally represent them that are dead
  3. 28 Aug 1957, No Disgrace to Descendants, General Court of Massachusetts, ...such proceedings, were and are shocking, and the result of a wave of popular hysterical fear of the Devil in the community, and further declares that, as all the laws under which said proceedings...have been long since abandoned and superseded by our more civilized laws, no disgrace or cause for distress attaches to the said descendants or any of them by reason of said proceedings.[7]
  4. 31 Oct 2001, Additional Victims Included, Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives in General Court, AN ACT RELATIVE TO THE WITCHCRAFT TRIAL OF 1692, chapter 145 is hereby further amended by adding Bridget Bishop, Susannah Martin, Alice Parker, Margaret Scott and Wilmot Redd.[8]
