Obituary
Transcript: [2]

Funeral services for Mrs. Eli Hanson, resident of Prairie Center Community in Clay County for the last 67 years, who died Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Olson, were conducted in St Peter's Lutheran Church Tuesday afternoon by Rev. M. O. Ensberg, the pastor. She was buried in the churchyard cemetery beside her husband, Hans Christian Hanson, who passed away June 4, 1920.

Mrs. Hanson who was nearing 90 years of age, was born near Trondhjeim, Norway, December 3, 1849. She came to America and Clay County in 1872 and on January 1, 1874, was united in marriage. She and her husband began housekeeping on their homestead where she lived continuously until she went to live with her daughter six years ago.

In the early days, when travel was slower and the main trail to Vermillion passed near the Hanson place, her home was known for its hospitality, and many a weary traveler is said to have found food and shelter there. Mrs. Hanson was one of the last survivors of that early group who worshipped in the St. Peter's Church and, while she was not a charter member of the church, she came to the community shortly after the congregation was organized and was always looked upon as one of its founders.

For the last few years her physical condition made it hard for her to get around, but her sunny disposition remained with her, even after she was forced to take to her bed early last month. To nearly everyone in the community she was known affectionately as "Grandma" Hanson.

She is survived by Mrs. Olson and a son, Edward Hanson of Yankton, 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Five other children preceded her in death.
