Biography

Hannah was born in 1765. She passed away in 1832.

  • According to one source (which contradicts everything else I've found to corroborate what my Grandfather had found in the 1960s and 1970s), the Hannah Ingalls that married Moses Stickney was born around 1776, which would have made her 10 years old when they married and 11 years old when her eldest daugher, Judith, was born. The death date for that source does match. This source is "thestickneys.com" and says THEIR source is an 1869 book "The Stickney Family" written by Matthew Adams Stickney. This source has no more information on Hannah's parents.
  • According to most other sources I've found (and my Grandfather's extensive research), the birth date was 1765, which would have made her 21 when she married and 22 when her eldest was born. These sources also say her parents were John Ingalls and Daborah (Stevens) Ingalls.
  • The Hannah Ingalls from the "most other sources", according to a commenter here, never married, and died on 23 April 1847 at age 87, which contradicts the 13 November 1832 that both above sources say THIS Hannah Ingalls Stickney died (which would make her either 56ish or 67ish when she died. That commenter removed the links to the parents that she insists are NOT the parents of THIS Hannah.

That's interesting, because the wife of Moses Stickney and mother of Judith Stickney is also Hannah Ingalls, whose parents were John Ingalls and Deborah Stevens, but if you're convinced these are distinct people, it's fine to disconnect.

I do not doubt that Moses Stickney married a Hannah Ingalls. He just did not marry the daughter of John and Deborah.

Well, again, that's fine. I just find it interesting that several different people doing the same research came to the same conclusion. At least one other (the person who entered the data on Ancestry and FamilySearch, who may or may not be the same person, and my grandfather, who died in the 1970s and so did all of his research in the '60s and '70s.

Now, is it possible they both made the same mistake and confused two different Hannah Ingalls? Possibly.

Although the dates of birth and death and the locations on both parents match the research my grandfather did into his ancestors. The only part that does not match is the date of death of Hannah Ingalls.

This also matches what I just found on Ancestry.com while searching for more details. Not that Ancestry is canonical, but it does mean someone else came up with the same information my Grandfather did (and since he died before the internet, I'm certain this is not his work).

Familysearch.org also has similar information. Might be the same person who entered the ancestry.com info, but again it matches what my grandfather found back in the 1970s.

Much of the information on ancestry and familysearch trees is not accurate or well-sourced. Most often online trees involve people copying other people's information without consideration to other documents (such as probate and property records) that either support or refute their information. In this case, there are two probate records that establish that Hannah Ingalls the daughter of John Ingalls and Deborah Stevens did not marry. The son John in that family also did not marry and his 1836 probate includes as an heir his sister Hannah Ingalls, single woman. And then there is Hannah's own probate. And her death record that gives her parents and says she is single.

Hannah Ingalls daughter of John Ingalls and Deborah Stevens did not marry. She died unmarried in 1847. The heirs of her estate were nieces and nephews including Dean Carlton son of her sister Deborah and children of her brother Jedediah Ingalls including John Ingalls, Hannah Ingalls, Sarah and William Newhall, and Harriet and William Fowler.

As far as I know, the identity of the Hannah Ingalls is not known.

This Hannah spouse of Moses Stickney should be disconnected from parents John Ingalls and Deborah Stevens and date of birth adjusted to eliminate confusion with Hannah the daughter of John and Deborah.

Here is the transcription of the death record for Hannah daughter of John and Deborah: Ingalls, Hannah, unm., d. John and Deborah, Apr. 23, 1847, a. 82 y.
