Biography

'New York state flag'
Polly (Ingalls) Eastman was born in New York.
Polly (Ingalls) Eastman was an Illinoisan.

1776-1779: Darius Ingalls and Lodema Lee were married on 25 Jan 1776,[1] in Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut.[2] They had nine children (Parker, Deliverance (aka Delia), Mary (aka Polly), Sarah (aka (Sally), Henry, Alvin, Anna, Loderma and Darius), two of whom were born in Pomfret: Polly's brother, Parker, on 9 Aug 1777,[3] and, as confirmed by town records[2] and otherwise,[4] her sister, Delia, on 22 Apr 1779.

1782-1790: By 28 Jun 1782, Polly's family had moved 80 miles northwest of Pomfret, to Wilmington, Windham County, Vermont, in the southeastern corner of that state, along the Connecticut River. That they moved there is known because Polly was born in Wilmington on that date.[5] Polly's sister, Sarah (aka Sally), was then born in Wilmington on 23 May 1784.[6] By 1790, Polly's family had moved again, this time 60 miles northeast, to Weathersfield, Windsor County, Vermont, where the 1790 US Census shows her father living with five unnamed females and one boy under age 16, those unnamed persons being Lodema, her daughters, Delia, Polly and Sally, and Parker, then about 13.[7]

1800: By 1800, Polly had married Amos Eastman and they, her parents, and her brother Parker all were living in separate households in Swanton, Franklin County, Vermont (about 100 miles or so northwest of Wilmington, and a few miles from Quebec, Canada); a household consisting of her, Amos and their first child, a boy, a household consisting of her parents and six other unnamed persons, and a household consisting of Parker and his wife.[8]

1850 Polly Eastman (67) was enumerated living with her daughter Laura F Lott (38) and her family in Waddams, Stephenson, Illinois; husband Thomas Harmon Lott (40) and their children Phebe M. (7) and Thomas (5), both children born in Illinois.[9]

  3. Parker is identified as a child of Darius and Lodema in the Ingalls Genealogy,[3] and a birth record in the Official Records of Town of Wilmington, Windham County, Vermont (where Darius and Lodema would later move) confirms "Parker Ingals" was born 22 Apr 1779 to "Da[rius] Ingals" and "Lodema" (and in upper right-hand corner of record) "in Conn."[4]
  4. Delia is identified as a child born to Darius and Lodema on 22 Apr 1779 in the Ingalls Genealogy,[5] and a birth record in the Official Records of Town of Wilmington, Windham County, Vermont (where Darius and Lodema would later move) confirms "Dille Ingals" was born 22 Apr 1779 to "Da[rius] Ingals" and "Lodema" (and in upper right-hand corner of record) "in Conn."[6]

  7. The 1790 US Census shows "Darius Ingels" living with five unnamed females and one boy under age 16.[9] See 1790 US Census: Vermont: Windsor Co: Weathersfield; Microcopy 637, Roll 12, Page 279, available online without restriction at Internet Archive (www.archive.org)[10].
  8. The 1800 US Census for Swanton, Franklin County, Vermont, shows three related and physically proximate households: (a) one of "Darius Ingols" (age 45+, born before 1756) and these unnamed persons: a female (age 26-44, birth range 1755-1774) (Lodema), a female (Sally) and a male (both age 16-25, birth range 1774-1784), two males (both age 10-15, birth range 1784-1790) and two females (both <10, birth range 1790-1800) (the others being, in unknown birth order, Alvin, Anna, Henry, another Darius, Henry, and another Lodema); (b) one of "Parker Ingols” and an unnamed woman (both 16-25, birth range 1774-1784); and (c) one of "Amos Eastman" (16-25, birth range 1774-1784) and an unnamed woman (16-25, birth range 1774-1784, being Polly) and an unnamed boy (<10, birth range 1790-1800, their son). See 1800 US Census: Vermont: Franklin Co: Swanton; Microcopy 32, Roll 51, Page 466, available online without restriction at Internet Archive (www.archive.org) (image[11]; original link[12]). Error: Ancestry.com misidentifies the town as Sterling whereas the census record at the Internet Archive plainly says Swanton.
