Eldad Ingalls was born about 1696 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts Bay. He was the son of Samuel Ingalls and Sarah Hendrick. There is no record of his birth, but Eldad is thought to be the child identified as (or a twin of) "Daniel", born October 16, 1696.[1]
The book "The genealogy and history of the Ingalls family in America : giving the descendants of Edmund Ingalls who settled at Lynn, Mass. in 1629 - Compiled by Charles Burleigh" says the following about Eldad Engalls:
Eldad, b. _____ There is no record of his birth or any absolute proof of his parentage, yet an exhaustive study of all facts goes to prove him son of Samuel and possibly the name Daniel born 1696 should read on the records as Eldad. A death of Daniel is recorded Sept. 25, 1700, and possible the one born 1689. Eldad married Hannah Watts, half sister to Samuel's wife.[1]

I have seen no evidence of a son by the name or anyone else by the name 'Eldad Ingalls' in the 1700s. No document I've seen refers to Eldad Ingalls Sr or Jr. Our Eldad was almost certainly the Haverhill selectman in 1743,4 even if he had a son Eldad.
The simplest explanation is that Eldad lived to be an old man and saw the start of the Revolutionary War.
Eldad's survival into at least the 1740s introduces more uncertainty into his parentage. Burleigh proposed that Samuel Ingalls and Sarah Hendrick were Eldad's parents using an inconclusive argument about duplicate Daniels. But now we have Eldad alive when Samuel did not name him in his 14 Feb 1731/2 will. Samuel named all other children proposed by Burleigh except Daniel.
Mary Lovering Holman gives an ingenious and far more conclusive argument, if not proof, that the father of Eldad was John Ingalls. See "Ancestry of Charles Stinson Pillsbury and John Sargent Pillsbury", Volume 2, pub 1938, starting on page 1061. Holman also provides evidence of Eldad's survival to 1776 and of an earlier wife and a daughter born before Eldad's marriage 17 Nov 1719.
