At risk of being mealy-mouthed, this image of a clan tartan might give the impression that the Hamilton family is a highland Scots clan in the same way as, say, the Macdonalds or the McPhersons. The Hamiltons are (probably) of English origin, albeit based for perhaps 1000 years in southern Scotland. The word 'clan' should not be applied to them in the same way as it is to highland clans. As for tartan, no Hamilton would have recognised such a thing until the idea was spread in later Victorian times. But is is a pretty one and the 'hunting' or 'ancient' version with green in place of the scarlet, is also very handsome.
