Biography

Michael Hyam has Jewish Roots.

Michael Hyam was born in England in 1799. He was the son of painter David Hyam and Sarah Shannon.

He came to Australia as a free settler via the ship George Canning, arriving 1828. After his arrival he set up a shoemaker's shop in Sydney and applied for a land grant which was awarded at Jamberoo. [1][2]

Michael Hyam married Charlotte Broughton in Sydney in 1835[3] - she converted to Judaism and adopted the name of Rebecca. After her death in 1849, he remarried to Deborah Moses, daughter of John Moses, in Sydney on the 9th of May, 1853.[4][5]

He purchased land at Nowra from William Ratnett in 1865.[6]

He died at his home in Nowra on the 3rd of September, 1878. [7] He was buried in the Rookwood cemetery, Sydney.[8][9][10]

Hyam Street in Nowra and Hyams Beach were named after Michael Hyam.[11]

Michael had arrived at Sydney in the George Canning in December 1827 and became a shoemaker but had the 'ingenuity' to acquire a 'landed estate'. Although Governor (Sir) Ralph Darling called him a 'perfect Jew' and was reluctant to give him a promised grant, Hyam received 1280 acres (518 ha) near Kiama in 1829. He founded Jamberoo where he built an inn and store and cut cedar. In 1847 he sold the property, moved to the Shoalhaven district and died at Nowra on 3 September 1878.
