Garvin L. "Red" Hurwitz of Glenwood Springs, a geologist, died April 15 at his home. He was 88.
Private services were held.
Hurwitz was born Sept. 12, 1907, in Denver. In 1925 he graduated from East High School. He received a bachelor of Arts degree in geology from the University of Wyoming in 1929 and a master's degree from Columbia University in 1930. During the Depression, he was a supervisor for the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked as a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey in Wyoming.
During World War II he was stationed at the Pentagon where he met Muriel "Gwin" Murphy, whom he married on May 11, 1947. She preceded him in death. He was an avid reader and enjoyed skiing, fishing, hiking and exploring old mining camps.
