Biography

Anne (Hurly) Potter was a convict after the Third Fleet.

Anne Hurley, or Hurly, was born about 1813.

Anne Hurley was convicted in Cork, Ireland, in 1837 for stealing money and sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Anne departed Cork on 29 Nov 1837 on the ship Diamond, arriving in Sydney on 28 Mar 1838. There were 162 female convicts embarked, one of whom did not last the 114-day voyage.[1]

She married fellow convict, Robert Potter, in 1843 in All Saints Church of England, Sutton Forest, New South Wales.[2] They had five children, one of whom died in infancy.

Anne passed away in 1862 in Berrima, New South Wales.[3]

Other than for her marriage, Ann was usually referred to as "Ann Grady or Hurley". The Implication is that her birth name is "Ann Grady" but she had used Hurly as an alias - possibly to avoid police or adopting it through a relationship. Either way both names need to be acknowledged. A point to be noted is that her son John William Potter identified his mother's maiden name as "Ann Grady" (Poor writing looking like "Ann Crady") at his marriage.
