VISITED AREA MANY TIMES ON CO-OPERATIVE ORGANISATION[5]
WIDELY KNOWN FRUITGROWER'S PASSING
The death has occurred in the Young District Hospital of a well-known fruitgrower and pastoralist, Mr. John Donald Alexander Hunter.
The late Mr. Hunter ranks amongst the pioneers of the rural co-operative movements. At the time of his death he was Chairman of the Young Fruit-growers' Rural Co-operative Society, having succeeded Mr. E. B. Treatt in that position about three years ago.
He was one of the foundation members of this Society and had been actively associated with it ever since. He was also actively associated with the Fruitgrowers' Federation, which went out of existence recently and was one of the growers responsible for its formation.
In the early days, before the fruit-growers had become the organised body they are today, the deceased gave up much of his time in developing the movement. There were occasions when he visited other centres—notably the Murrumbidgee irrigation area in the pursuit or that objective.
He was a native of Young, where he had lived for the 63 years of his useful life, devoted to rural pursuits, and taking a keen and active interest in promoting the welfare of the man on the land. His father and mother were the late Mr. and Mrs. William Hunter, who were amongst the early pioneers who came to this district from Scotland. 'Merryvale,' where the late Mr. Hunter lived, was a mixed grazing and fruitgrowing property, in the Monteagle district, about five miles from Young.
He was married at Young 34 years ago to Christina Baxter, who survives. There is no family, but in addition to his widow, he is survived by two sisters, and two brothers, Mrs. T. Sutherland, of Young, Mrs. Kircher (Sydney), Mr. Henry Hunter, of Young, and another brother in Sydney.
