Biography

Born in Gibson County, Tennessee in 1880, Nettie was the daughter of George W. Hunt (13 Jan 1851-29 Aug 1918) and his wife, Sarah Emmeline "Emma" Hayes (22 Jul 1850-25 May 1942). She married James DeFoe on March 8, 1899 in Gibson, Tennessee.[1] Their children included:

  1. F.G. DeFoe (1900-1900)
  2. Homer Adrian DeFoe (1904-1978)
  3. Mary Wyolodean DeFoe (1909-1931)
  4. James Vernon DeFoe (1917-2006)
  5. Janie Vernice (1917-2001)

They farmed in Civil District 11 of Gibson County, Tennessee.[2][3] By 1920, Nettie's husband, Billy Jim, had prospered, buying the family a house at 311 1st Street in Trenton, Tennessee and opening up a general store in the same town. The home, however, was close to the county jail and workhouse, so probably not luxurious.[4]

Nettie died of tubercular meningitis at the age of 46, on May 4, 1926.[5] She is buried in Poplar Grove Cemetery in Dyersburg, Tennessee.[6]
