Don Hume is Notable.

Donald Hume was an Olympic athlete that competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics.

Donald Bruce Hume was born on 25 July 1915, in Anacortes, Skagit, Washington. He was the son of Bernard Field Hume (1887-1954) and Mary Ethel Cunningham (1884-1972).^[1][2] George's parents were both born in Iowa.^[3][4] George's father worked as a secretary at the Chamber of Commerce.

Don graduated from Anacortes High School in 1936. While there, George played on the basketball team.

George attended the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, and was on the rowing crew that went to the Olympics in Berlin in 1936, where they won the gold medal. George manned the position of Stroke, and, though he was ill at the time, and the team had been given the roughest and windiest boat lane, they won, edging out the German and Italian teams.^[5][6] He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity, Pi Sigma Phi transportation honorary, Big W club, Oval club, and Fir Tree.^[7]

By 1940, George was lodging in Seattle, and working as an insurance salesman.^[8]

Don registered for the WWII draft on 16 October 1940 in Seattle, Washington.^[9]

Donald married Barbara McHardie on 28 November 1940, at University Baptist Church in Seattle, Washington.^[10][11][12] They were later divorced.^[13]

He entered the U.S. Merchant Marine, shipping as Purser in Pacific and South Pacific waters on the M.S Cape Flattery from 14 October 1942 until 20 September 1944. He then attended the Hospital Corps School in Sheepshead Bay, New York, before assignment to the U.S. Marine Hospital in San Francisco. He served as Purser/Pharmacists' Mate on the S.S. Richard E. Dana from 1 February until 4 March 1945 and then as Purser/Pharmacists' Mate on the S.S. Wideawake from 4 March 1945, applying for and receiving a license as Chief Purser and Pharmacists' Mate on 17 March 1945. ^[14]

In the 1950 census Donald B Hume (age 34), Driller, was living in the home of his parents in Olympia, Thurston, Washington.^[13]

Later, George worked in coal and gas exploration and traveled extensively.

George died on 16 September 2001, in Sultan, Washington, of a stroke.^{[15][16][17][18][19][20]} His remains were cremated.^[21]
