FAYETTEVILLE: Charles Hughes, 76, of Baldwin, a retired farmer, was killed Wednesday when a car overturned on him as he walked along Highway 16 near his home.
State Trooper Ed Ray said Hughes was walking on the shoulder of the road when Dan A. Spencer, 22, of Baldwin, lost control of his car, which overturned several times.
Hughes died instantly when the car overturned on him.
Hughes moved to Baldwin about nine months ago from Gillham. He was a native of Center Point, born Nov. 30, 1879.
He is survived by his wife; four sons, Harry Hughes of Camden, Charles Hughes, Jr., of the University of Arkansas Agronomy Department, Richard Hughes of Chicago and John L. Hughes of Magnolia; three daughters, Mrs. Thelma Beal of Chicago, Mrs. Margaret Veal of Enid, Okla., and Mrs. Susie Brooks of Combs; a brother, W.A. Hughes of Decatur, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Emma Martin of Idabel, Okla.; and a half-brother, Nat Hughes of De Queen.
Funeral services were held in De Queen Saturday, June 30 at 10 a.m. in Wilkerson Funeral Chapel.
