Biography

Harriet Howard was born in about 1819 in Drewsteignton, Devon, England.

Harriet Howard married James Blackaller (aka Blackler) in 1839. The marriage was registered in Exeter, Devon in the last quarter of the year.[1]

Harriet and James had five children:

  1. James Blackler (1841-)
  2. William Blackler (1844-1846)
  3. John Blackler (1846-1929)
  4. William Blackler (1848-1918)
  5. Harriett Blackler (1850-)

In 1841 Harriott Blackaller (age 20-24) lived at Little Nettacott in Upton Pyne, Devon with her husband James (25-29).[2]

In 1851 Harriet Blackler (age 32) lived at Reeds Court, Cowick Street in St Thomas the Apostle, Exeter with her husband James (36, Labourer) and four children: James (9, Scholar), John (5, Scholar), William (3), and Harriett (1).[3]

Harriet and her family immigrated to New Zealand in 1851 - they sailed aboard the ship Canterbury which departed from the East India Docks, London on 18 Jun 1851 and arrived in Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand on 18 Oct 1851: Harriet Blackler (31), her husband James (34, Agr Labourer), and their four children: James (9), John (5), William (2), and Harriet (1).[4]

Harriet's husband James Blackler of Doyleston in the district of Canterbury, laborer, passed away on 14 Nov 1880 - in his Will, dated 22 Jan 1879, he advised the Executors, their sons John & William, to apply the interest and annual income from his estate towards Harriet's maintenance and benefit during her life.[5]

Harriet Blackler passed away in 1887, aged 68 years.[6]

According to the oath of her son John Blackler of Dunsandel, a farmer, Harriet Blackler of Sunnyside near Christchurch, widow, died at Sunnyside Lunatic Asylum on 18 Jan 1887, and her estate was valued at less than £300.[7]
