Alfred Hoverd was born in 1869 in Dringhouses, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom and baptised there at St. Edward's church. He was the son of William Hoverd and his wife, Hannah Scriven. ^[1][2][3]

On the 1871 Census, he was recorded as Halpehaed instead of Alfred, when the family were living in Hett Mill, Hett, Durham, England, United Kingdom. ^[4]

Alfred Hoverd was married to Martha Smith on 30 Mar 1891 in Warrington, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom. ^[5][6]

They had a daughter, Martha who died age 4 years on 26th April 1896, at 23 Commercial Road, Cadoxton, Wales. Alfred was described as a dock labourer. ^[7]

in 1901, Alfred Hoverd (31, navvy foreman, new railway) and Martha (31, born in Cheddar, Somerset) and a daughter, Fanny (7, born Ince, Cheshire) were living in Monks Hesledon, Durham. Four Smith relatives were living with them. ^[8]

In 1911, Alfred Hoverd (41, a labourer in a naval equipment yard) and Martha (41) had two daughters, Fannie (17, born Ince, Cheshire) and Phyllis (0, born New Mills, Derbyshire) and a son, Albert Hoverd (7, born Liverpool) living with them at 28 Crawley Road, Wallsend on Tyne, Northumberland.
