Sanford Hover was born in 1844 in Salt Rock Township, Marion County, Ohio, United States.^[1] His parents were Isaiah Hover and Mary Scribner.^[2][3] He married Ellen Moon on April 11, 1869^[4] He died in 1933 in Siloam Springs, Benton, Arkansas, United States^[1]

Death of Civil War Veteran^[1]

Friends here have received word of the passing of S. Hover at his home at Siloam Springs, Ark., Jan. 30th. He had not been ill and it was just a gentle passing over. He would have been 89 years old had he lived until April 22nd. At his last birthday Mrs. Hover invited in some friends for a birthday dinner and at that time he enjoyed the occasion as much as anyone present. Old age with it's frailties came slowly but surely. The last weeks of his life he took little nourishment but his mind was still functioning.

Mr. Hover was a Civil War veteran with a splendid record, having been in many of the major battles of the war and it was a delight to him to tell his hearers of some of these engagements. He was a man of honor and integrity and he had the respect of young and old, and was ever loyal to his country and flag he loved and fought for. He loved his church and during the years when he was stronger gave his support to every worthy object. He leaves besides his widow, two sons and grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Hover left Ireton last June for Siloam Springs. They had spent some time at the Soldier's home at Marshalltown and other places.

The following obituary appeared in the Siloam Springs paper:

"Sanford S. Hover, for many years a resident of Siloam Springs, died last evening at his home here.

"Hover was born in at Marion, O., on April 22, 1844, and at the time of his death was 88 years, 9 months and 3 days old. On Dec. 12th 1863 he enlisted as a private in Company G, 82nd regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was discharged at Louisville, Ky., on July 24th, 1865. He was a member of the M. E. church, having joined early in life.

"For about 40 years Hover had been a resident of this vicinity, a few of the past few years having been spent in Iowa. He returned to Siloam Springs in June 1932. He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Belle Hover; and two sons, W. D. Hover, St. Paul, Minn. and C. G. Hover of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The latter will arrive tomorrow morning. Other relatives include two brothers and three sisters.

"Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Pyeattes funeral home with the Rev. G. A. Moss, pastor of the First M. E. church, officiating. Internment will be in Oak Hill cemetery."
