Biography

Joseph Hough was born in Pennslvania on December 31, 1842.[1] He was the son of James Hough and Julia Hontz.

In 1850, he was living with the Yost family, next door to his parents and siblings (see notes section below.)[2]

During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 202nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and served as a private from January 24, 1865-August 3, 1865, when he was mustered out.[3]

Sometime before 1870, he married Elizabeth M. [Unknown (see notes section below). According to the 1900 Census, Elizabeth had three children, although only two names are known - James Charles and Katie (likely died before 1900).[4]

In 1870, Joseph and Elizabeth were living in Phillipsburg, Warren, New Jersey (where they lived their entire lives), and Joseph worked as a laborer on the railroad.[5] In 1880, the couple and their son were in Phillipsburg, and Joseph was a railroad conductor.[6]

Joseph was enumerated in the 1890 Veterans Census,[7] and in January 1891, applied for a pension as an invalid.[8]

In 1895, the couple lived with their son and daughter Katie (the only time she appears).[9] In 1900, they lived with their son, and Joseph continued to work as a railroad conductor.[4]

Joseph passed away on June 5, 1901, in Phillipsburg, Warren, New Jersey, at the age of 58. He was buried in Phillipsburg Cemetery in Phillipsburg, Warren, New Jersey.[1]

Notes

  • There is some uncertainty over whether Joseph is in fact James and Julia's son. In the 1850 Census, he does not appear in their household, but in the Yost household next door, and he does not appear anywhere in the 1860 Census. His listed age in the 1850 Census is 9, which would make his birth year 1841, and since his mother's birth date was around 1826/27, she would have been very young when she gave birth. Find a Grave lists his birth date of Dec 31 1842, and his implied birth year in subsequent census documents is about 1844, which makes the possible parentage more reasonable.
  • No evidence has yet been found concerning Elizabeth's maiden name. Carrell (1928) identifies Joseph's spouse as "Elizabeth Rehring", but with no supporting evidence.[10] This source also claims a son named Charles (consistent with James Charles) and living in Phillipsburg around 1928.
  • Some Ancestry trees identify her as Eliza Rehrig, daughter of George Rehrig and Angeline Strauss, although with no supporting evidence. While plausible, as Eliza appears in her parents household in 1860 in East Penn, Carbon, Pennsylvania and is therefore around the right age, this option loses credibility as Eliza is still living with her parents in 1870, at which time Joseph and his wife Elizabeth (this profile) are married and living together in Phillipsburg, Warren, New Jersey. Eliza is also usually identified as marrying Aaron Noll, and dying in 1890.
