Paul had been one of those sought in 1794 as a distiller who was violating the liquor laws by selling his liquor by shipping it downriver to New Orleans. When President Washington sent troops into the area to suppress the insurrection, Paul HOUGH was the man with the whooping voice who led the New Jersey militia into a swampy morass, where they were incapacitated. In 1804, Paul built a stone house and mill on Paul's Run where he prospered. He was a staunch supporter of the Lutheran Church, and he and his wife were buried in Zion Graveyard.
