Biography

Frances was born in 1833 to William and Linda (Ellis) Hosford at Thetford, Vermont. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Oberlin, Ohio, and then about 1844 to Olivet, Michigan.

Frances volunteered as a nurse during the American Civil War.

Nurse Frances Hosford died of disease .

During the United States Civil War, Miss Hosford was a Special Diet Kitchen manager appointed under the United States Christian Commission. This duty entailed the supervision of the hospital kitchen, which prepared food to a physicians' order for each patient. She died in service of disease 15 August 1864 at Hospital Number 3, Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Research Notes

Her date of death published in the Hosford genealogy and the Christian Commission reference both list August 15th as the day, but Hosford has 1865 and Moss has 1864 as the year of death. The 1865 date is after the close of the Civil War, May 26, 1865. See references below.
