Biography

father -Willem Hoppe(n)

Andries Hoppen arrived in New Netherland by 1651 (when a child was baptized in New Amsterdam) as an officer employed by the Dutch West Indies Company in New Amsterdam as a Commissary of Wares. In 1655 he was transferred to the Dutch settlement north of the Delaware River, where he was appointed Secretary and Attorney General of that Colony. On 13 Apr 1657 he was granted the small burgher right of the City of New Amsterdam. [1] He was a merchant, a general trader and freighter who owned a sloop (‘yacht’) for trading along the North River (Hudson River) as far as Fort Orange (Albany) and other Dutch possessions to the north (New England). [2]

Having agreed with Jacob Stol for the purchase of Bronck's land and, having made a payment on it, [3] he and Stol both died before the deed passed. The two widows, Geertie Hendricks and Geertruyd Andries, completed the transfer. Geertie eventually acquired it then sold it the next day to Captain Richard Morris who named it Morrisania.

In view of her marriage with Van Tright which took place in May 1660, the widow Mrs Hopper secured to each of her four children the sum of 200 Gilders. These were Catharine, born 1652, who married Frederick Thomasz of New York; William, born 1654, who married Minne, daughter of Jurck Paulus; Henry, born 1656, who married Maria, daughter of John Van Blarkum; and Matthew-Adolphus who married Anna, daughter of Jurck Paulus. [4] [5]

Andries Willemszen Hoppe(n) was only about 36 years-old when he died, sometime after 03 Mar 1658 and before 18 Dec 1658. [2]

Ca 1650 Andries Willemszen married Geertje Hendricks,

Andries Hopper bought a house-lot (Castillo Plan, Block C Lot #6) between 15 Oct 1653 and 21 Jan 1656. He died in it Dec 1658, leaving a widow and five children. On 25 Jan 1673, Geertie Hoppen and the trustees for her children conveyed their house to Siourt Olphertsen, a mason. [10] The Hopper farm consisted of 80 acres on the upper west side (48th to 55th Streets and from near Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River in a roughly northwest direction). It was acquired by the Hopper family in 1667, apparently by Andries’ widow, Geertje; she had married Van Tright in 1660, and her sons were still underage. Presumably, the money came from the sale of Bronck’s land. The farm served as home to numerous Hoppers until near the end of the 1800’s. [11]
In 1653 Andries served as a private in Captain Arent Van Hattem’s Company in New Amsterdam’s Burger Corps. [12]

Should the children all have the same spelling of the LNAB? Three of the four have it spelled differently: Hop, Hoppe, Hopper.

The [Netherland Settlers Project naming convention] calls for the LNAB of each individual person to be determined independently.
