Biography

Louis Fegley Hopp was born in 1905 in Lewisburg, Union County. His parents were Louis Goldsmith Hopp (1884-1943) and Florence Fegley (1888–1912).[1] His mother died when he was only age 7, and his father moved to New York City. He was raised in Lewisburg by his maternal grandparents, J. Allen Fegley and Hannah Moyer Fegley.[2], [3], [4]

Fegley graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1923. He attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg and graduated from Williamsport Business College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.[2]

He married Helen Corrine Arnwine (1913–2008) on 19 September 1937 in the Lock Haven Lutheran Church.[5] Their children included:

  1. Joseph Edward Campbell-Hopp (1931–2007) (Note: In the 1940 census, Joe was listed with the surname Campbell and identified as Fegley's stepson.)[6]
  2. Robert Louis Hopp (1938–2004)

His grandparents established the Lewisburg News Agency, a very popular newstand at 325 Market Street in Lewisburg. The family lived in the same building. He grew up working in this store from childhood. By 1940 he owned the store and worked there until he retired in 1971 and sold the store.[6], [2], [7]

He was very active in community life - a member of Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewisburg, Lions Club, Oddfellows Club, Knights of Malta, Masonic Lodge, William Cameron Engine Company (volunteer fire department), and more. A Republican, he was also active in local politics.[2]

Having been in poor health for an extended period of time, he moved in with his daughter in nearby rural Northumberland County for the last 21 weeks of his life.[2], [8] He passed away in 1986 at age 81 and was buried in Lewisburg Cemetery, Lewisburg, Union County, Pennsylvania (Plot: Section 3C, Plot 1649).[9]

Memories: 1
Enter a personal reminiscence or story.
I remember going into Mr. Hopp's newstand almost weekly as a child. I loved exploring all of the shelves to see what was available, occasionally buying a paperback book when I had saved enough money. My parents would give me a few coins to buy candy while they chatted with Mr. Hopp. I remember lots of laughter in their conversations.
