Biography

Mary Hopkins was born in November 1640 in Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony, the daughter of Giles and Catherine (Whelden) Hopkins.[1][2]

She married Samuel Smith on 03 January 1665[/6] in Eastham, Plymouth Colony.[3] Samuel was baptized in Hingham on 11 July 1641, the son of Ralph Smith.[2] He died on 22 March 1696/7 in his 55th year at Eastham.[3] Their homestead was located on Billingsgate Island in Eastham on Cape Cod Bay.[4] Billingsgate was eroded by the sea and was submerged into the Bay in the first half of the 20th century.[5]

Administration of Samuel's estate was granted to his widow, Mary Smith and his son, John Smith on 20 April 1697. The settlement of his estate, dated 22 April 1697, named his widow Mary Smith; grandsons Samuel and Joseph Smith, the sons of eldest son Samuel; son John Smith; and daughter Mary Hamilton. The widow of son Samuel, Bathshua Freeman alias Smith, was awarded a portion of the estate as her due from a marriage agreement that had not been completed by Samuel Smith Sr. as his son had died suddenly.[4]

Mary Smith died shortly before 02 July 1700 in Eastham when her estate was inventoried.[4] [6][7][8]

When Mary's estate was divided on 18 July 1700, the same heirs were named as in Samuel's estate settlement. The administrator of her estate was son-in-law Daniel Hamilton.[4] Daniel Hambleton made oath to the truth of the inventory. Her estate was divided between her grandchildren and children: Samuel Smith, Joseph Smith, John Smith, and Mary Smith, alias Hambleton.[9]

The children of Samuel and Mary (Hopkins) Smith were recorded at Eastham:[3][2]

I'm planning to update this profile using the sources from the Hopkins "silver book" if there are no objections.
