Richard Franklin Hooper was born 1 July 1856 to Sarah Malinda Brown and John Cleveland Hooper in Benton County, Alabama, USA.
Benton, Randolf, and Talladega counties gave up land to form Cleburne County on 6 Dec 1866 when Richard was 10 1/2 years old. This is why you see references to various family members and Richards living in both Benton and Cleburne County through out their profile's.[1]
Richard's first census was in 1860. They were in Calhoun, Alabama. Dad was a farmer with $1,400 in real estate and $2,090 in personal property. Dad was 48 and Mom 38, Joseph 20, Obediah 16, Susan 13, William 11, John 9, Richard 3. Then there were 3 little Brown's in the house. Mary 1, Martha 2 mos., and Phebe 7 mos. [2][3]
In 1870, Richard was tween. They had moved to Cleburne, AL formerly Benton County. They were using Edwardsville P.O. Richard was a farm laborer at only 12 along with Willim 21, and John C 17. None of the females were classified as working and no one in the house was listed as attending school during the year though all were called literate. Dad owned the farm worth $1,000 and $300 in personal property. The census taker was not thorough on this form.[4][5]
