Biography

Eveline was born in 1917. She was the daughter of Neville Hood and Eveline Broad. She passed away in 2006.

¶ She was working as a model in Paris when WW II broke out. Her father telegraphed money for tickets home telling her to get out now.

¶ When the Battle of El Alamein was faught, she was working for the Foreign Office in Egypt. She was dating the Prince of Egypt. Her manager suggested that the optics were not good. She told him that if anything were going on, she would be dripping in jewels. The Prince liked to drive across the desert with the accelerator on the floor. He died when his car flipped over at high speed.

¶ When she returned to London, she found her flat had been flattened by German bombs. She worked in a bunker in London communicating with the French resistance. She was on night shift. When she arrived the evening of the fifth of June 1944 the day staff was leaving and they were talking and celebrating and even had a bottle of champagne. She had no clue why they were so happy. D-Day was supposed to be on the 5th but the weather was bad. She was in the basement sending out cables. Suddenly the word came that she had to send out messages to all the participants telling them the invasion was delayed. She protested that she could not type fast enough but the woman at the BBC told her to suck it up. So she went directly to the generals upstairs who told her that she could send the messages open (not in cipher).

This is more memories than comment. The memories are stories I've heard about my mother-in-law. She was creating a career for herself in Paris as a fashion model when WWII began. Her father sent money for passage back to England with instructions to leave France immediately. During the war she was in Egypt with the Foreign Office. She dated Ali Prince of Egypt. She was told that this could disturb opinons of her character. She replied that if something untoward were happening she would be covered in diamonds. Prince Ali liked to drive fast across the desert. He died when the car he was driving flipped and crashed. When Susan returned to London, she found the building containing her flat a pile of rubble. Her job in London was communicating with the French underground. She was given the job of telling the partasans warning of D-Day. She did not have time to encode the messages. She was given permission to send the messages in the clear.
