Biography

Hannah was a Friend (Quaker)

Hannah Holms, daughter of Francis, was baptized at Mobberley, Cheshire 1 Mar 1638.[1] An alternate transcription is for "Hannah Home, daughter of Francis Holme.[2]

Her birth to Francis and Joan Holmes was also recorded in Quaker records.[3]

Hannah Holmes married Mark Newby in Dublin on 21 May 1674.[4]; they had four children:

  1. Rachel (1675-?), m. Isaac Decou in 1695
  2. Stephen (1678-c.1707), m. Elizabeth Wood in 1703
  3. Edward, m. Hannah Chew in 1706
  4. Elizabeth, m. John Hugg in 1714

Hannah was living on 16 Sep 1684, when she was recorded as a posting a bond and granted letters of administration as executor of her husband Mark's estate.[5] Both spellings, Newby and Newbie, appear in the will abstract.

Clement wrote that "Hannah, the widow of Mark Newbie, married James Atkinson in 1685... It does not appear there were any children born of this marriage."[6] Elsewhere, Clement identifies him as "James Atkinson, of Philadelphia" and that their marriage was at Hannah's house and recorded in Newton Meeting records.[7] Another record gives their marriage as 16 Nov 1684.[8]

Hannah died before 1701, when her husband James Atkinson remarried to Hannah Day, widow. His death 24 June 1711 is recorded by Philadelphia Meeting.[9] His will mentions "Edward Newby son of late wife whose name is not given."[10]
