Biography
Roscoe Holley is a part of US Black heritage.
Roscoe Holly was born 4 May 1896 in Cashville, South Carolina, USA.[1]
In the 1900 census Rosco (age 11 b. May) was the son of Zack R Holly (age 54) and Madora Holly (age 43) in Reidville, Spartanburg, South Carolina, with eight siblings.[2]
In the 1910 census Rosco Holley (age 21), Laborer, was the single son of Z R (age 59) & Madore (age 52) Holley in Reidville, Spartanburg, South Carolina, with five siblings, two nephews, a niece, and a cousin.[3]
Roscoe Holly married Ellen McElrath about 1913, as estimated from their first child Roland's birth in about 1914.
On 5 Jun 1917, Roscoe Holley 28 registered for the WWI draft. He was born 4 May 1893 (sic) in Spartanburg, Spartanburg, South Carolina. He was living at 601 1/2 E. Ninth, Chattanooga, Tennessee and working for Shelton Mills as a truck driver. He was married, with a wife and child.[4]
In 1918, Roscoe Holly, still in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was working as a chauffeur, and living at 601 1/2 Ninth, the same address as Mary Holly, a nurse.[5]
In the 1920 census Roscoe Holly (age 30), Truck driver, was the married head of household in Chattanooga Ward 7, Hamilton, Tennessee, with wife Ellen Holly (age 29), Roland (age 6), and brother-in-law Ed Washington (age 36), Trainman on railroad.[6]
In the 1930 census Rosco Hally (age 40), Truck driver for flour mills, was the married head of household at 601 1/2 East Ninth Street, Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee, with wife Ellen Hally (age 39), son Roland (age 16), brother-in-law Laurence McElrath (age 22), and two lodgers.[7]
Ellen Holly 45 died 19 Apr 1935 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was buried on 21 Apr in Highlands Cemetery. She was born in South Carolina to Tom McElrath of South Carolina. Husband was Roscoe Holly. Son Roland Holly was the informant.[8][9]
Roscoe Holley 49 died on 1 May 1945 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He was buried 6 May 1945 in Durham Grove. He was born to Zak Holley and Madora Durham. Informant was brother-in-law Walter Rice.[10]
Research Notes
The birth year of Roscoe Holly is unclear. 1889 is only preferable because it fits so well into the birth order of his siblings. Yet his Social Security application reported 1896.
