Biography

John Dewey Holder was born on 24 March 1911 in North Carolina, United States.^[1] He was the son of Joseph B. Holder (1884 - 1967) and Cattie (Davis) Holder (1892 - 1974).^[2]

He was listed a "Baby" Holder in the household of Joe B. Holder on the 1920 United States Census. He and his family were living in Rockfish, Cumberland County, North Carolina.^[3]

Dewey Holder was 13 years old when the 1930 United States Census was taken. He was living in the household of his parents. Their home was still in Rockfish.^[4]

When the 1940 United States Census was taken, Dewey was 22 years old. He was single, living with his parents in Rockfish, and working as a farmer.^[5]

He was married to Carthie Skipper on 27 October 1944 in Bennettsville, Marlboro County, South Carolina.^[6][2] They were the parents of at least two children together. One of the children is potentially still living. Their son, Joe Clifford Holder, passed away in 1974.^[7]

Dewey and Carthie were enumerated as a married couple on the 1950 United States Census. Five children were enumerated in their household, located in Rockfish. The oldest three children were Carthie's children by a previous marriage. The youngest two were Dewey and Carthie's children together. Dewey was working as a farm helper.^[8]

According to his death certificate, John Dewey Holder was a carpenter.^[2]

John Dewey Holder died on 19 May 1971 in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina at the age of 60. He was buried in Culbreth Cemetery, Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina.^[2][9]

Research Notes

His gravestone has the incorrect year of birth engraved on it and his death certificate has the wrong year of birth. All records confirm that he was born in 1917, not 1911.
