OBITUARY -
Henry Hoffman is Dead. Illiness Extending over two years finally fatal. Sacramento Union - Septerber 18, 1911
After a lingerling illness, extending over a period of two years, Henry Hoffman, city trustee from the Seventh Ward, died yesterday morning at 2 O'clock at his home. 1605 M Street. Organic heart disease caused the death. Mr. Hoffman took to his bed last Friday and his end was not unexpected. Trustee Hoffman, who was 56 years of age, was born in Broderick, Illinois. He was educated in the schools of that city, and when a young man went into the grocery business with his father. In the fall of 1889, he came to Sacramento. Soon after his arrival in this city he established a grocery store at the corner of sixteenth and M streets. He continued in that business until six years ago, when he sold out and retired. Two years ago he was stricken with heart trouble and traveled extensively for his health, visiting numberous health resorts in this state. At one time a year ago his death was momentarily expected. Six years ago he entered the race on the Democratic ticket against Harry Nauman for trustees from the Seventh ward and was defeated. Two years ago he again ran against Nauman for the same office, this time being elected. Until a month ago he attended the meetings of the board of trustees, but was forced to give up an active career on account of the numerous attacks of his ailment. Although he had never held office before being elected trustee, he was active in Democtatic circles in this city, serving many times as a delegate to the conventions of that party. He died while yet in the prime of life, and his loss is mourned by a host of friends. All those who met him personally and in business have nothing but good to speak of him. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Hoffman; three daughters, Mrs. H.C. Beabout, Mrs M.J. Scanion and Mrs. E.M. Fitzgerald: two sons, Charles and Ralph Hoffman; two borthers, Mark and Giles Hoffman of Illinois, and a sister, Mrs. Sophronia Broderick, also of Illinois. The city board of trustees may fill in on the ballot for the November elections the names of candidates to succeed Hoffman for the unexpired term. It is probable that C.W. Mier, Republican nominee for trustee from the Seventh ward, will be a candidate.
