Biography

Tabor (Hoff) Fisher is a member of the Appalachia Project (South Central Appalachia Team).
Tabor (Hoff) Fisher is a descendant of Mayflower Passenger William Bradford.

I was born June 30, 1958 at Washington General Hospital, Washington, DC. I'm told that there weren't a lot of babies on the floor at the time and that nurses would carry me about as they went about their duties. (It was easier to carry the few babies than to station a nurse to watch them in the nursery.) I understand that I had a lot of hair!

I grew up in Seabrook, MD, attending Gaywood Elementary, Robert Goddard Jr.. High, and DuVal Senior High School -- I graduated in 1976. It was an exciting year to graduate and to live in the DC area. I spent July 4 1976 on the National Mall and watched the fireworks from the Washington Memorial.

I loved growing up in the DC area and frequently visited the Smithsonian. Unfortunately, I ended up thinking that museums were always top-notch and always free. I had a real shock when I moved away!

After high school, I attended Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, VA. (now Eastern Mennonite University). Money was an issue and I spent my second year back home, attending Prince George's Community College. I returned to EMC, in the fall of my junior year, but left again part way through the year because of finances.

I spent three years working in the Maryland suburbs of DC (most of it at Prince George's County Hospital) and saving money. In the meantime, I met David Fisher and we became engaged. I finally was able to return to college in the Spring of 1982 and transferred to Taylor University in Upland, IN, which is where my fiance was in school. I graduated in 1983, with a BA in Religious Studies. David also graduated the following year and began a career in computers.

David's job took us to Tulsa, Oklahoma and we had two children while living there: Adrian and Alec. I also got a Master's in Philosophy from Oklahoma State University and began teaching philosophy at Tulsa Junior College (now Tulsa Community College). Eventually, we moved to Binghamton New York so that I could continue my education at SUNY-Binghamton (now Binghamton University -- it does seem that everywhere I go they change the name!). During my tumultuous years in graduate school, the kids grew, I came out of the closet, and Dave and I separated amicably. With my doctorate in hand (from the Philosophy, Interpretation, and Culture program -- which no longer exists -- the jinx continues) -- I was hired at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY. That was in 2002. I have been there ever since. I suppose once I leave Le Moyne they will change the name. :)

Hi Tabor, the US Civil War Project is conducting a Check-in for 2024 to see if your still interested/active in the Project.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you. You can click the reply button or message me with your answer. Thank you. Pam Kreutzer, Leader of the US Civil War Project

Hi Pam,

Thanks for reaching out! I had actually forgotten that I had signed up for the project (gulp!) Once I got your message I checked out the resources for the project and it is wonderful! I do plan on becoming more active. I've been steadily adding stickers/profiles for those who fought, mostly on the CSA (my family is predominately from North Carolina). I do enjoy the work, but was plugging away alone. Found the maintenance categories and will jump in on the needs connection files during connect-a-thon. Thanks again for reaching out!

One of the people I've worked on, Nathan Thompson Sawyer, deserted from the CSA and joined up with the Federals. I thought I'd share his profile with you and make sure I did that right (since he was on both sides!). He's Sawyer-2832. I'd appreciate any advice you can give -- as I said, I've been working along by myself and just wasn't paying attention to the resources available.

Does the project have a Discord or other communication method?

Hi Tabor, first off, you did a really nice job on Sawyer-2832, I don't see anyplace where I could advise you. If you add to your following list US CIVIL WAR you'll be able to see what is happening in the project. It is also the best place to ask a question and get an answer. The Military and War Project has a discord channel, but I'm not on there very much. The google group, isn't very busy, so the G2G is probably the best place for communication.

If you'd like to sign up for some names to work on during the connect-a-thon, here is the link, these soldiers all mention family: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Civil_War_Project_Monthly_Challenges_Page

Thank you for remaining in the project. Pam

Tabor, the reason it turns red, is it is a category that has not been created.

I tried other info in his bio from Fold 3 but it is nor in WikiTree's categories.

I recommend that you do two things.

1) take the info off the unit where you have it, and list it as the plural (units)) . That will not create a category, but you will get rid of the Red category.

2) use the Roll of Honor template. You will not be able to include the unit. But it is a good tribute.

list thus

I will send the template to your private email address.

Hi Tabor-

I have a question and can't find how to ask the Appalachian Group. Someone has added several stickers to various direct family members and ancestors' profiles of Catawba County and slightly East of there indicating they are part of Appalachia and in need of resourcing and I wanted to ask some questions. I saw your name and the wonderful work you've done on here and hope its okay I posted. I only have my phone to do work on right now and WikiTree currently has a glitch preventing direct messaging using it; thus the post. If you have time and at your convenience; please email / reply / post on my page as I have no problem sharing that information. Thank You so Much! Becky Elizabeth

Hi Becky,

Good to meet you! I'm happy to answer your questions, if I can. I can tell you that Catawba county is a part of Appalachia, so the stickers are appropriate. I can imagine, however, that it is a bit disconcerting to find that someone has changed a direct ancestor's profile and marked it in need of sourcing (which will invite more changes to come) -- all in the interest of making the tree as lush and green as we can, of course! But still, my heart skips a beat if I see someone has changed something on a treasured ancestor. What questions can I answer? Happy to help!

Eli Tabor could very well be the same as the one on the 1880 census. I randomly choose him when I tried to get at least one profile for each cemetery in Cumberland County. As time goes I will add more.

Hi Taber,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or special event. Read the goals and tasks of the project and join if it is a good fit.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.
