Biography

Sophie Mary (Hoerner) Price was born the son of David Hoerner and Mary Cooper. She married Dr. James Woods Price of Saranac Lake in 3 Sep 1919.[1] At the time of her death, she was survived by a brother, Charles Hoerner of Toronto; a nephew, Kirk Hoerner of Montreal and a niece, Mrs. O'Neill (Joan) O'Higgins of Ottawa.

She trained at the Montreal General Hospital, McGill University. [2] She accepted a position with the new Reception Center, Saranac Lake, NY, which opened in 1905, working there until the start of World War I.[1]

She was a Nursing Sister and later Matron with the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the Great War.[3] She embarked at the Port of Montreal on the S.S. Metagama on 06 May 1915. Sophie served with the No. 1 Canadian General Hospital beginning in early 1915, and then with the No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (Étaples and Boulogne, France).[4]

Sophie then served as home sister and later assistant matron of No. 3 Casualty Clearing Station, France and No. 15 Canadian General Hospital in Taplow, England.[4]

She was demobilized on 23 Jun 1919 at Montreal. She was Mentioned in Despatches & 'A' List,[5]awarded both the Royal Red Cross 1st Class [6] (decorated in 1919 by the Prince of Wales at a special investiture held in Montreal by the prince[1]) and Royal Red Cross 2nd Class.[7]

Following her discharge from the unit, she again took up her duties in Saranac Lake. She died in 1961[8] and was buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Saranac Lake, New York.[1]
