NOTE: As explained further down, there is currently a discrepancy as to Edmond Hodges' actual resting place. The FindAGrave memorial manager has been contacted to help identify which is correct.
Edmond Hodges was born May 26, 1818. He was the son of Barnum Hodges and Phebe (Richardson) Hodges.[1][2]
Edmund married Harriet Hamlin. They lived in Sebasticook, Kennebec County, Maine.[3] This census report lists the following children:
Edmond's FindAGrave Memorial also lists:
So, Edmond and Harriet had at least eight children, at least four of whom survived childhood.
Harriet died on 13 Nov 1857.
Edmund married Susan N. (Robinson) Scribner April 10, 1859, in Winslow, Kennebec County, Maine.[4] Susan was the widow of Charles A. ScribnerThey lived in Winslow, Kennebec, Maine.[5] Susan brought at least four children to the marriage. Little Barnum has died, and a new baby has been born. Edmond's occupation has changed from laborer to butcher. The children of the household in 1860 included:
The 1880 census[6] shows Edmond, 62, and Susan, 51, living in Winslow, Kennebec, Maine with a full household. There is a son, Frank Hodges, 33, raising the question as to whether "Frances, 4," in the 1850 wasn't Francis, a son. This person works as a laborer. The next offspring is James Hodges, now 20, followed by Ashar Scribner, 25 who works on the river and is single, followed by Abbie Scribner, 23, who is divorced, and a grandson, Norman (?), who is three years old. The next person is Albert A. Scribner, also divorced, and two more grandsons, Albert G , six, and Norman (?), also four. Is it possible that young Norman was listed twice in error, or both boys were named for a relative in the Robinson/Scribner alliance?
Edmund died March 23, 1896, in Winslow, Maine.[2] According to one cemetery card marked with "Accession #4176, he was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville, Kennebec County, Maine.[7] However, there is a second, marked with Accession #4152,[8] which records that he was buried in Hodges Cemetery, clearly a family cemetery, and now reported as being on private property. Accession #4152 also lists Edmond's first wife, Harriet, and several of their children. Accession #4176 also lists Susan. Whether he was ever buried at Hodges Cemetery is unknown at this time. He died about 40 years after Harriet, and it's possible that the records and/or Harriet's stone, were pre-marked with his name, but new plans were made by 1896.
