He was promoted again to Captain before his death.[4] He took part in a number of famous battles including the battle of the Somme, the advance to the Hindenburg Line in Spring 1917 and at the battle of Passchendaele in July and August 1917. , a more detailed account of his army career is given on the online war memorial for Grateley.[5] He died in 1917, aged 39 a few days after being shot in the head. His orderly, rifleman Albert Shepherd, received the Victoria Cross for his subsequent actions.[6] [7] Archibald was buried in France, but also has a memorial on his parents’ grave in Hampshire.
