Archibald joined the 3rd Battalion Hampshire Regiment on 16 Apr 1895 claiming to be 18 years old, although he was just 17.[2] All his military records have his birth 3 Apr 1877, but his birth wasn’t registered until a year later in the Apr-Jun quarter of 1878.
Archibald Hoare married Lydia Mary Hillier in 1907 and their marriage was registered in Christchurch, Hampshire, England.[3]
At the outbreak of the First World War, Archibald was serving as Second Lieutenant with the Kings Royal Rifles. By January 1915 he had been promoted to British Army Company Serjeant Major 9190 King's Royal Rifle Corps and was at Alma Barracks, Blackdown, Chertsey. He was promoted again to Captain before his death.[4] He took part in a number of famous battles including the battle of the Somme, the advance to the Hindenburg Line in Spring 1917 and at the battle of Passchendaele in July and August 1917. , a more detailed account of his army career is given on the online war memorial for Grateley.[5] He died in 1917, aged 39 a few days after being shot in the head. His orderly, rifleman Albert Shepherd, received the Victoria Cross for his subsequent actions.[6][7] Archibald was buried in France, but also has a memorial on his parents’ grave in Hampshire.
