Biography

Gordon was a Friend (Quaker) who served with the American Friends Service Committee.

Gordon Hirabayashi is Notable.

Gordon Kiyoshi Hirabayashi, whose Japanese name was Hirabayashi Kiyoshi (平林 潔), was born on 23 April 1918. He was an American sociologist, best known for his principled resistance to the Japanese American internment during World War II, and the court case which bears his name, Hirabayashi v. United States.

He joined the American Friends Service Committee, which was known for moving threatened students from the west coast to the safer east coast; but, he hitch-hiked to the internment camp per the U.S. governments request.^[1]

In 1999, the former Catalina Federal Honor Camp near Tucson, Arizona, where Hirabayashi was sentenced to hard labor in the 1940s, was renamed the Gordon Hirabayashi Recreation Site. Located within the Coronado National Forest, the site offers a public campground.

He died on 2 January 2012.
