Justine Maria Sophia Christine Hinzpeter was born on 16 Feb 1844. ^[1] Her parents were Heinrich Hinzpeter and Dorothea Schroeder. ^[2] She was baptized on 18 February 1844 in Barkow, Lübz, Mecklenburg, Germany. ^[1]

She married Wilhelm Johann Helmuth Jarchow on 26 October 1863 in Barkow, Lübz, Mecklenburg, Germany. ^[2] They had nine children:

4. Frederick ^[3]

She and her family departed Hamburg, Germany for the United States on 28 October 1863 on the ship Teutonia. ^[4]

She appeared in the 1870 US Census in Green Garden, Will County, Illinois. ^[3] She was living with her husband William, their children Christopher, Henry, Mena, and Frederick, her mother Doretta Hinspeter, (her nephew?) William Hinspeter, and (her niece?) Mena Hinspeter. ^[3]

She died on 8 April 1879 in Dayton Township, Bremer County, Iowa. ^[5]

She was buried at Saint Johns Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner, Bremer County, Iowa. ^[6]

Her obituary in the 24 April 1879 edition of the Waverly Republican ^[5] reads:

JARCHOW. -- Died in Dayton, on the 8th inst. MARY, wife of Wm. Jarchow, aged 35 years, 1 month and 23 days. Mrs. Jarchow was highly respected for her Christian character and deportment, and her firm belief in a redeeming Savior; which won for her a large circle of friends, before whom she practiced what she believed and taught in her daily walks of life. She leaves a husband and nine children, the youngest only thirty minutes old at the time of her dissolution. The body was taken to the new cemetery, (its only occupant,) purchased of H. Schnadt. The services were ably conducted by Rev. Henke, at the place of interment, and the remains carefully lowered to their long repose amidst a large concourse of weeping friends.
