Private Thomas Hinshaw was Prisoner of War for 18 months, Held at Alton Federal Military Prison, Alton, Illinois during United States Civil War.

Born Aug 9 1841, North Carolina, son of Ezra Hinshaw and Permelia Jarrell.[2][5][7][8][10][11][12]

During the Civil War, Thomas served as a private in Company D, 33rd Tennessee Infantry, Confederate.[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][30]

On Jan 1, 1863, Thomas was captured by Union Soldiers in Hardin County, Tennessee at the Battle of Shiloh; shot in the shoulder. On Feb 2 1863, he arrived at the Union Prison Camp at Alton, Illinois. Freed on exchange Apr 1, 1863. He was again wounded and captured, on Sep 19, 1863, in the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. He was forwarded to Louisville, Kentucky on Oct 14, 1863 (apparently arriving there on Nov 28 1863), but then shipped once again to Alton Prison where he remained for 16 months until his was "released on oath" Mar 15, 1865.[3][17] Alton Prison recorded Thomas as age 23, 5' 10.5" tall, dark complexion, black hair, black eyes.[17]

He married Sarah Samanthia Keller, May 24 1866, Fountain County, Indiana.[1][2][12][21][22] They had the following children:

Thomas and Sarah lived in Veedersburg, Fountain County, Indiana.[3]

It is unknown what became of Sarah (they might possibly have divorced or she may have died in childbirth in 1883 with the birth of twins).[27] Thomas moved to Hickman County, Kentucky, taking daughter Martha Jane and son Charlie to live with him, but leaving the other children in Indiana.[3]

Thomas was a tabbacco and cotton farmer in Hickman Kentucky.

He then married Malinda A. Davis in 1887.[3][7][8][10] Malinda, daughter of Isaac Barton Davis and Margaret Jane Childress, was born Feb - 1864, near Crystal, Obion County, Tennessee.[2][3][7][8][10][28] They had the following children:

  2. Thomas Vestal Hinshaw 1890 - 1961
  3. Ira Isaac Hinshaw 1894 - 1969
  4. Matilda Hinshaw 1898 -

On April 26, 1907 the Hinshaw family had the misfortune to have their rented home destroyed by a fire. Nothing was saved except the clothing the family wore at the time of the fire. The family was left in destitute circumstances. [29] They picked themselves up by the bootstraps, and by the following month were settled into a home purchased by Thomas with a mortgage.

Malinda died July 10, 1910 from tuberculosis. Thomas, then aged 69, sold his home and moved to Ravenden Springs, Arkansas with his daughter Sarah Evaline Hepler and her family in November of 1910. . . . and the execution of his fathers will in November of 1910.

He lived in Arkansas with his daughter Sarah Evaline Hinshaw-Hepler and her family until his death in 1918. Thomas Bartholomew Hinshaw died Aug 5 1918, buried Wrenfrow Cemetery (Janes Cemetery), Ravenden Springs, Randolph County, Arkansas.[3][20][29] He is buried in Wrenfrow Cemetery, Ravenden Springs, Randolph County, Arkansas. His name was placed on a monument erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy at the main gate entrance to Hickman City Cemetery, Hickman, KY., called the Confederate Memorial Gateway.

At the entrance to the Hickman City Cemetery, Hickman, KY, there is a monument (Confederate Memorial Gateway) to local Confederate soldiers, including "T.B. Henshaw", Company D, 33rd Tennessee Infantry. Erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1913 with funds provided by the Private Robert Tyler Chapter of the UDC. [1]
