Biography

Born Dec 19 1833, Cherry Grove MM, Randolph County, Indiana, son of Nathan Hinshaw and Asenath Hodgin.

He married Eunice Smith, 15 Jan 1852, Cherry Grove MM, Randolph County, Indiana.  Eunice, daughter of James and Hannah Smith, was born Feb 6 1831, North Carolina. They were the parents of:

1. Nathan Lindsey Hinshaw (1852-1931)
2. James Colwell Hinshaw (1855-1870)
3. William Henry Ira Hinshaw (1857-1925)

At Cherry Grove MM on 4-8-1854, Tilnias and wife Eunice and son Nathan Lindley were granted a certificate to White River MM.  

At White River MM on 5-6-1854, Tilnias and Eunice and son Nathan were received on a certificate from Cherry Grove MM.  

At White River MM on 03 Jan 1857, Tilnias, Jericho meeting, was complained of for attending a marriage contrary to discipline of a member; "07 Feb 1857 offense acknowledged".  

At White River MM on 06 Feb 1858, Tilnias and wife Eunice and children Nathan Lindley, James Colwell, William Henry Ira, were granted a certificate to Cherry Grove MM.  

At Cherry Grove MM on 4-10-1858, Tilnias and wife Eunice and children Nathan Lindley, James Colwell, and William Henry Ira, were received on a certificate from White River MM.

It appears as though Eunice probably died between 1858 and 1860, as the 1860 census shows Tilnias with sons Nathan and James living in the household of Tilnias' father, Nathan Hinshaw of Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana:

Nathan L Hinshaw, age 8, born in Indiana; "orphan"; attended school.

James C Hinshaw, age 5, born in Indiana; "orphan".

He then married Sarah Roseanna Dervage, 28 Sep 1861, Randolph County, Indiana.  Sarah, daughter of Peter Dervage and Hannah Mann, was born Feb 17 1827.  They were the parents of:

1. Rosa Belle Hinshaw (1865-1917)
2. Nancy Elizabeth Hinshaw (1868-?)

Sarah had previously married Jan 28 1845 to Uriah Davis, and had a daughter Mary Jane Davis, born 1853, that she brought to this marriage.

At Cherry Grove MM on 11 Jan 1862, Tilnias, Lynn meeting, was reported married contrary to discipline; "08 Feb 1862 disowned".

Sarah died in 1874.  

He then married Rachel Outland Mills, 30 Mar 1876, Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana.  Rachel, daughter of Thomas Jordan Outland and Asenath Pritchard, was born Sep 25 1841, Rich Square MM, Northampton County, North Carolina.  They were the parents of:

1. Clifford Hayes Hinshaw (1876-1942)
2. Ina May Hinshaw (1878-1972)
3. Lilla Estella Hinshaw (1880-1966)
4. Harry Edward Hinshaw (1883-1973)

Rachel had been previously married to Nathan Mills (1837-1873), on Aug 13 1863, Edgar County, Illinois, by whom she had a daughter, Flora Adel Mills, born Dec 6 1871, that she brought to this marriage.

Apparently this marriage was short so no issue, Tilnias is shown as a widower in the 1895, 1900, 1905, and 1910 census.
