Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

Joseph was the son of John Hingston and Rachel Collier.[1] He was born at West Alvington near Kingsbridge, Devon on 15 June 1764.[2]

Banker of Kingsbridge with Walter Prideaux snr. and jnr.. Owned cottage with Dorothy Fox in Foxhole/Vauxhall at the edge of the estuary below Dodbrooke.[citation needed]

On 22 November 1785 Joseph married Sarah Ball at Bridgwater Quaker Meeting House, Somerset. The Quaker marriage record describes him as of Kingsbridge, Devon, son of John Hingston of Kingsbridge, merchant, and Rachael; and her as daughter of Joseph Ball of Bridgewater, grocer, and Susanna (Susanna Reynolds[1]).[3] They had two children:

Joseph's first wife Sarah died on 6 April 1790 and was buried at Bridgwater Quaker burial ground, Somerset on 12 April.[8][9]

On 23 September 1796 Joseph married again. His second wife was Catharine Phillips Tregelles. They married at Falmouth Quaker Meeting House, Cornwall. The Quaker marriage record describes him as of Kingsbridge, Devon, son of John Hingston of Kingsbridge; and her as Joseph Tregelles, deceased merchant of Falmouth, and Sarah (Sarah Hingston[1]).[10] They had nine children, of whom two sons and five daughters survived childhood:[1]

Joseph died on 30 April 1835 at Plymouth, Devon, and was buried at Plymouth Quaker burial ground on 8 May. The Quaker death and burial record gives his age at death as 71 and describes him as a merchant.[31][32] His will, dated 4 February 1829, with a codicil of 30 July 1832, was proved on 12 September 1835. In it he:[33][34]

  • described himself as a banker of Plymouth, Devon
  • bequeathed
    • his manor of Holbeton, Devon to his son Joseph
    • the dwelling house where and his son Joseph lived at Dodbrooke (near Kingsbridge), Devon to his son Joseph and his daughter Sarah Ball Prideaux, wife of Walter Prideaux, banker

    • money legacies to his children Sarah Ball Prideaux, Catharine Tregelles Hingston and Rachel Collier (wife of George Fox), Charles Hingston (doctor of medicine), Susanna Anna Hingston, Alfred Hingston (of Plymouth), Sophia Price Hingston and Louisa Ellen Hingston (the last two being under 21)
    • his dwelling-house at Plymouth, Devon, and his household goods, to his wife Catharine Phillips Hingston, along with £1350, in addition to £1250 secured under their marriage settlement
  • named, along others:
    • his deceased grandfather James Hingston
  • gave his wife Catharine a life interest in the residue of his estate, with it to be divided equally between his children on her death
  • appointed as executor his wife Catharine Phillips Hingston, his son-in-law Walter Prideaux of Plymouth, his sons Joseph and Charles, and George Fox of Gonvena (in Wadebridge), Cornwall

The death of Joseph's second wife Catharine was registered in the Kingsbridge district of Devon in the first quarter of 1858.[35] Probate was granted on her estate on 11 May 1858, with her death date recorded as 13 January 1858.[36]
