Biography

Lucy was born in 1866. She was the daughter of James Hillary and Sarah Hamblin.

Lucy lived with her parents and siblings in Malvern, Durban, Natal, South Africa. Their property was called "Bradfield".

When she was only about 10 years old her oldest sister Kate Sarah passed away at the age of 13.

Her parents decided to move the family to York, Natal. After a short time they left York to live in Umfata. Eventually they returned to Malvern to live in their former home "Bradfield".

Lucy was the first of the Hillary children to marry. At the age of 21 she married Reuben John Jones on 11 April 1888 at the Public Hall, Bellair, Durban, after Banns[1]. Reuben was 25 years old, a Bachelor, occupation Salesman from Ladysmith; Lucy was a Spinster of Malvern. The witnesses were Chas. J. Jones, Frances Mary Hillary and James Hillary.

They went on to have at least nine children.

Lucy's father James passed away on 4 October 1907. Her mother Sarah passed away in 1928.

Her husband Reuben passed away in 1944 at the age of 81.

Lucy passed away in 1963 at the age of 96[2]. Cause of death was recorded as Cerebral Thrombosis. She was buried at Old Main Cemetery, Dundee, Natal, South Africa[3].
