Alfred Hawthorn Hill was born in 1924 in Bridge Street, Southampton, the son of former circus performers. He later changed his first name to "Benny" in homage to his favorite comedian, Jack Benny.
At age 17, he moved from Southampton to London to become a theater performer. By 1955, he had his own sketch comedy television show in the UK which grew in popularity and in its heyday aired in 140 countries. The show was canceled in May 1989.
He never married and had no children. He passed away in 1992.
